9th Bienal do Mercosul, If the Weather...

for the 9th mercosul Bienial some artists were invited to work with companies that both dealt with high end technologies and the transformation of natural resources.

U and quebreira where developed through visits at the naval pole of petrobras, where the new P55 deep sea extraction platform was being finnished.

in response to the intense impact the proportions of this industrial place, the thousands of workers arrived form all brazil and latinamérica, and the very phisichal body shacking of the machines working 24 hours, 7 days a weeks all year round.

A sound recording of that landscape was made and then given to flautist Joana Saraiva who listening to it improvised and interpreted the final piece. almost deaf to what she was playing (because of the intense sounds she was listening to) she tuned the interpretation through the vibrations of the flute in her fingers, lips and body, reducing thus the inmensity and the violence of the Polo Naval to the scale of one single body.

Confronted to this sound, that emanating from one speaker installed at mouth height filled the whole space of the Usina do Gasómetro, was a sculpture, U, inspired by the workers relaxing in the outskirts of the factory and in the desire web that linked them together and to that place.
